This Air Fryer French Fries Recipe is going to show you how easy it is to make delicious crispy french fries in a few easy steps without the mess.
These air fryer fries give regular French fries some “healthy” competition. They are air fried until crispy and the edges have slightly browned. We combined sweet potato and the classic russet potato but you can use one or the other.
Why Air Fryer French Fries vs OG French Fries
Unlike OG French fries that are deep fried in a pot of oil, these just require a coating of oil. A game changer for a few reasons:
- You don’t have to baby sit them over the hot bubbling oil.
- They cook a lot faster.
- You can actually focus on cooking the perfect main dish like palomilla or pork chops.
Other than shaking the basket and tossing the fries at the halfway point, this recipe is very low maintenance, and are much lower in fat.
Our Tips for Making Air Fryer French Fries
Don’t stress too much how you cut the potatoes. We cut them ¼ inch thick but sometimes they are a little bigger and sometimes they are more like skinny matchstick fries. Just try to cut them as evenly as possible so they cook at the same time. Just remember, the skinnier they are, you can expect them to cook quicker.
We don’t add salt to the potatoes before air frying. We have found that salting the fries before can make them soggy and the salt just falls to the bottom. Instead salt as soon as they are ready, just as you would if you were deep frying them in a pot of oil. They will be much crispier and have that salty finish that everyone wants in a French fry.
As with most air fryer recipes, you need to work in batches because most air fryers have limited space. This is especially true for any food you want crispy like these potatoes. To be sure all of the potatoes are warm by the time you serve you have two options: Place each batch as they are ready on a rack lined sheet tray in a hot oven at 300 degrees OR once they are all cooked place all of them back in the air fryer for a couple of minutes to warm them through. You can top them with fresh herbs or seasoning if you want to add some more flavor.
Air fryer fries are the perfect tag along to almost any meal. Part of Palomilla’s popularity is always serving it alongside a mountain of fries but growing up “papitas” accompanied almost any meal. Some of our favorite meals deserve a side of fries like our Roast Chicken, Double Cut Pork Chops and even our Pan Roasted Filet Mignon.

kcalIngredients
1 russet potato, cut in ¼-inch sticks
1 sweet potato, cut in ¼ inch sticks
3 tablespoons of avocado oil
Sea salt or Maldon salt
Directions
- Preheat the air fryer at 400 degrees for 5 minutes with nothing inside.
- Drizzle the potatoes with avocado oil and make sure they are completely coated.
- Place the potatoes in the air fryer basket. If your basket is small you may need to work in batches. (For this recipe we worked in two batches)
- Air fry them at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. Halfway, toss the basket.
If at 15 minutes they are not crispy add another 2 minutes. They should be fully cooked and golden brown in the edges. Salt the first batch. Then work on the other batch. - Once all the batches are ready, add all of the potatoes back into the air fryer. It’s ok if the basket is crowded. You are adding everything back in to be sure they are all hot, even the first batch you pulled out. Air fry for 3-5 minutes until they are all hot.
- Place on a platter and sprinkle with a little more sea salt. Serve immediately.
