Hot Toddy

This Hot Toddy recipe will be something you will love to make all season long. It is a warm delicious combination of whiskey and a simple ingredients that come together to keep you hot this season.

You can consider the Hot Toddy your new winter staple. It contains lemon, star anise, cinnamon and hot tea. Then we combine it with whiskey for the coziest cocktail you’ve ever made.

Most Cuban Abuelas use “manzanilla,” or chamomile, for everything. By everything, we mean everything! They used it to cure a sore throat, reduce swelling from mosquito bites, heal a stye, condition hair, treat eczema and help a tummy ache, so it’s only natural we found a spot for it in a cocktail. We think they would approve.

Our Tips and Substitutions for Your Hot Toddy

You can sub the whiskey for bourbon or brandy and omit the star anise if you don’t love it. You can swap the lemon for other citrus or the honey for agave or maple syrup. It’s an easy recipe to make your own. A traditional hot toddy recipe uses hot water, but to give ours some extra flavor we use hot chamomile tea. The fragrance of the chamomile compliments all the other ingredients.

If you want a more pungent taste of the cinnamon and star anise you can add them to the water when you are bringing it to a boil in a pot or kettle. To ensure your drink stays really hot you can fill your glass with hot water before assembling.

Hot Toddy for your Cough and Cold?

There is a long standing urban legend that whiskey is a possible cold remedy. Unfortunately, this is just a rumor. The fact is when you are sick, your body needs to heal. Whiskey, while delicious, is not something that helps your body do this. However the other ingredients found in the Hot Toddy will help you out. The combination of simple ingredients like warm water, honey and lemon can work wonders.

If you are taking over the counter or prescription medication, whiskey is especially not good for you. So we strongly advise against a Hot Toddy, unless you want to make it a virgin.
